: Commemorating the 36th anniversary of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), the Royal Madras Yacht Club (RMYC), in association with ICG, will conduct the Coast Guard Sailing Cup at the Chennai Port Trust here on February 16 and 17.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, S.P. Sharma, Commander, Coast Guard said that 15 teams from Indian Navy, Army, Coast Guard and some corporates will be taking part in the tournament. The categories are seabird class, 420 class and Omega boats.
Sailors such as Army’s Yakobu, Kaushal Kumar, D. Rajiv Kumar and MEG Bangalore’s T. Shiva, Narayana, L.K. Rao and Rahul will be participating. “We have been conducting various events highlighting our activities. We are happy to promote sailing through RMYC, which is more than a century old,” said Sharma.
Vivek Shanbaug, Secretary, RMYC lauded ICG’s several initiatives to connect with civilians. K. Chidambaram, Rear Commodore of RMYC spoke about the Club’s concept of training the children of fisherfolk and introducing them to sailing. He praised ICG’s yeomen service to the nation of guarding the sea and preventing sea pollution. — Special Correspondent
