MUNICH: Top-seeded Marin Cilic had few problems while booking his second round berth at the BMW Open here on Wednesday. Cilic scored a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 win over Germany's Michael Berrer.
After rain postponed their match from Tuesday evening, Croatia's Cilic needed just over an hour to make the second round where he will meet another German — Simon Greul — on Thursday.
Fourth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber, who won the tournament in 2007, also had a smooth passage into the next round when he beat compatriot Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-4 and will face Spain's Santiago Ventura in the second round.
Ventura recovered from losing the first set of his first round tie against Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jnr of the Ukraine to record a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3 win in a match which began on Tuesday and ended on Wednesday.
Eighth-seeded Benjamin Becker was a second round casualty as he crashed out 6-4, 6-0 against Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic.
Serena in last eight
World No. 1 Serena Williams overcame a mid-match slump to defeat unseeded Andrea Petkovic in three sets to reach the quarterfinals of the Rome Open.
The Australian Open champion won 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 against the 49th-ranked German but was rarely at her best.
Serena is playing in her first tournament since winning in Melbourne in January but unlike her second round match on Tuesday when she started slowly, she was out of the blocks quickly enough.
She broke Petkovic in the fifth game with a backhand winner down the line and then again in the seventh with a cross-court forehand winner.
Petkovic was not overawed by her illustrious opponent and matched her shot for shot while Serena produced as many unforced errors as the 22-year-old.
Things got interesting in the second set as Petkovic broke Serena in the fourth game and had three break points for a 5-1 lead in the favourite's next service game.
