P.U. Chithra (Kerala) continued on with her dream run for a third day running at the 58th National schools athletics meet here on Thursday. The Palakkad girl was again unstoppable as she completed a golden treble adding the 1500m senior girls gold medal to the 3000m and 5000m title won over the last two days.
Chithra also came well within the meet mark of 4:36.75 as she raced to glory ahead of team-mate Jessy Joseph and Jyoti Saini (Punjab) and clipped the tape at 4:35.72. Kerala added a solid 10 gold medals, including five in the six short relays, to its overnight tally of 4 and thus distanced itself from the rest in the fray for a 16th straight title.
Besides, Kerala was also benefited when Vishnu Unni was elevated to the gold medal position in the senior boys’ pole vault after Sonu Saini (Haryana) who had won the event on Wednesday was disqualified for age-fraud.
Kerala now has a tally of 15 gold medals and an equal number of silver and bronze medals for a tally of 160 points. Maharashtra (8-8-5) , with a total of 72 points is currently second.
