Visas for members of the China and Chinese Taipei teams, favourites for the Volkswagen world junior table tennis championships at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh indoor stadium, Gachibowli from December 9 to 16, were obtained on Wednesday evening.
“The two teams will reach Hyderabad on Friday morning,” Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) vice-president S.M. Sultan, who is also the event’s Organising Secretary, told The Hindu .
The prime event of the global junior calendar would have lost a lot of its sheen if the said teams, among the favourites in the fray, had been absent.
“In addition to the title sponsor, financial support has been confirmed from PVP Ventures and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority.
“V. Arun Kumar, MP, Rajahmundry, as our chairman, championship committee, is also making efforts to enlist the backing of the oil companies too,” Sultan added.
The Indian team had a practice session at the temporary facility, which has a dozen tables, besides the swimming pool adjoining the main venue. Foreign teams will access the practice facility from Friday morning.
Meanwhile, installation of the tables was expected to be completed by Thursday evening and the Korean team to arrive in the night.
