Chhattisgarh boys and girls bagged four of the eight slots for the IMG basketball academy, following the two-day trials held at the Sanskriti School, Chanakyapuri, here.
Pooja Ambistha and A. Kavita among the girls, apart from Sanjeev Kumar and Dinesh Mishra in the boys section have been selected from Chhattisgarh for the scholarship program that will take care of their education, training and stay in the US till they graduate to college. The scholarship will continue after a review every year.
Satnam Singh of Punjab, Ashiv Jain of Madhya Pradesh, Soumya Babbar of Delhi and Barkha Sonkar of Uttar Pradesh were the others to get the nod, from among a bunch of over 50 players who were mainly short-listed following the national sub-junior championship in Chittorgarh.
The Basketball Federation of India (BFI), in a release issued here on Saturday, stated that the children would leave for the US by the end of August, so as to be in time for the semester that starts on September 1.
The children will be accompanied by the former professional tennis player, Ravishankar Pathanjali, who works for the IMG and had studied in the US. Among the stars who have trained there over the years, the IMG basketball academy has some illustrious names like Chauncey Billups, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter and Joakim Noah to its credit.
The basketball academy is located as part of a network of academies in an area spread over 300 acres in Florida.
