NEW DELHI: Chennai has been selected as the venue for the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group I tie between India and Australia to be staged from May 8 to 10. The winner of the tie will make it to the World Group play-off.
Making the announcement in a release issued here on Tuesday, the secretary-general of the All-India Tennis Association (AITA), Anil Khanna, said that the decision to hold the tie on hard courts instead of the traditional grass was made in consultation with the non-playing captain S.P. Misra, who had represented the players’ point of view, and the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA).
“AITA has decided that in the given circumstances Chennai will be the proper venue. Chennai has also recently conducted an ATP Tour event where all the leading players of the world participated,” said Khanna.
It was also announced that the team that beat Chinese Taipei — Somdev Devvarman, Rohan Bopanna, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi — has been retained for the tie against Australia. The reserve players are expected to be announced at a later date. — Special Correspondent
