Kamal Chawla of Railways made a stunning recovery from the brink of elimination to reach the semifinals of the Biz Bazaar 9-ball pool championship for men at the Spring Club here on Saturday. He will take on reigning national 8-ball pool champion Sundeep Gulati of Delhi for a place in the final.
Placed in Group ‘J’, Chawla lost to Vikrant Gupta of Bengal in the final of the winners’ bracket and was forced to qualify from the losers’ bracket where he overcame the young Ankit Rehani of Delhi 7-3.
In the round of 64, Chawla was pitted once again against Gupta, whom he tamed 8-6. He took out three more Bengal-based players, top seed Shahbaaz Adil Khan of PSPB (9-7) in the round of 32, eliminated Shoaib Khan of Bengal (9-7) in the pre-quarterfinals and Brijesh Damani of PSPB (9-6) in the quarterfinals, en route to semifinals.
Gulati’s good form continued as he downed multiple National champion Manan Chandra of PSPB 10-9 in the quarterfinals. The other semifinal will be between Sumit Talwar of Chandigarh and reigning junior National champion Malkeet Singh of Railways.
In the ladies’ 9-ball pool championship, Judy Walia of Karnataka will take on Neena Praveen of Tamil Nadu in one semifinal while Indira Gowda of Karnataka will come up against former National champion Suniti Damani of Bengal in the second.
