NEW DELHI: Sports enthusiasts will get to watch more international sporting action on Doordarshan with the Union Government notifying five major sports tennis, hockey, football, chess and billiards and snooker under the national importance policy.
The guidelines stipulates that the private television channels holding telecast rights of any of these events will have to share the feed with Doordarshan.
According to the regulation, Doordarshan will carry live feeds without any advertisements of the sports channels or the sports rights-holders of the sporting events of national importance held in India or abroad. The list of events were drawn up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting after consultations with the Ministry of Sports, Prasar Bharati, the private sports channels and the sports rights-holding companies. The regulation will be valid for five years with possible annual review of sporting events.
The list of events:
International: Olympics Games (summer and winter), Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Afro-Asian Games.
Tennis: Davis Cup, all matches featuring India and semifinals and final. All final matches (men's and women's) of the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U. S. Open including those matches featuring an Indian player in quarterfinals and above.
Hockey: All matches featuring India and semifinals and final of the World Cup and the Champions Trophy.
Football: Final and semifinals of the World Cup and Euro Cup and all matches featuring India and semifinals and final of the Asia Cup.
Chess: Final of the World championship and the Chess Olympiad.
Billiards and Snooker: Final of the World championship including all matches featuring Indian players in quarterfinals and above.
