Defending champion Bangalore DFA XI will clash with Indian Bank in the first semifinal of the Don Bosco-Fr. McFerran trophy all-India football tournament after the former beat SAI 2-1 in the quarterfinal here on Saturday.
The opening goal came as early as the third minute after SAI’s goalkeeper S.H. Mohudoom Naina’s mistake led to Vinoth’s goal.
The Bangalore side was successful in creating chances but was found wanting in its execution. Vinoth and Rajesh were both presented with great opportunities midway through the first half but they failed to capitalise. However, the second goal came soon after when an exchange of passes between the left winger Amoes, Vinoth, Ramachandran was given the finishing touch by Rajesh.
For SAI, forward Ameerudeen looked the liveliest of the lot but unfortunately found no support. Bangalore DFA’s central defensive pairing impressed and comfortably warded off any challenge that the SAI frontline could pose. Ameerudeen scored three minutes from time after a goal mouth scramble, but it proved to be just a consolation.
The results (quarterfinals): Bangalore DFA XI 2 (Vinoth 3, Rajesh 27) bt SAI 1 (H. Ameerudeen 87); ICF 6 (Raj Kumar 5, Guru 14, 41, Anbu 21, Venkatesan 27, Fredy 72) bt Vizag DFA 1 (Satosh 52). — Sports Reporter
