McDowell Mohun Bagan snatched a thrilling odd-goal-in-five victory against Air India to take a firm step away from the relegation zone in an I-League match at Kalyani near here on Saturday.
Continuing the winning ways which the team has been experiencing in recent days, Mohun Bagan shot into the lead in the 11th minute through a Odafa Okolie penalty kick conversion and increased the lead through Aussie striker Tolgay Ozbey in the 27th minute. Before the team broke for half-time Henry Ezeh reduced the margin for Air India with a 38th minute strike.
Branco Cardozo headed in in the injury time to restore parity for Air India. Mohun Bagan’s Denson Devdas headed home the match clincher two minutes later to leave Mohun Bagan a deserving winner.
The win enabled Bagan to log with 22 points from 21 matches while Air India, second from bottom of the league table, remained on 19 from 23 games.
Air India goalkeeper Bubai Singh was shown the red card for a critical offence inside the penalty area in the 81st minute. Four minutes later, Mohun Bagan’s Echezona Aniychie was shown the yellow card for the second time in the match to leave the field.
Cardozo’s equaliser and Devdas’s match-winner came in the injury time leaving the spectators a happy lot.
