Award is truly motivating: Poncha

Rehan Poncha, who became the second State swimmer to be honoured with the Arjuna Award after Shikha Tandon (2005), was delighted with the recognition. The 25-year Karnataka ace, who had won the ‘Best Athlete' title in three National Games is now training in the US for the Commonwealth Games and in a message here, said: “Obliviously I am very delighted and it has truly motivated me and I would do my best and bring honour to the country in the Commonwealth Games.”

Rehan Poncha also thanked his parents, coach (S.Pradeep Kumar) and other well wishers for their support. Pradeep Kumar said “I am happy for Rehan and he is a hard working boy.” The Karnataka Swimming Association and Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre, where Poncha trains when in Bangalore, also hailed this well- deserved honour.

The Karnataka Olympic Association president, Govindaraj congratulated Rehan Poncha for making the State sports fraternity proud by winning the Arjuna Award. He also said that Poncha is likely to be allotted a site by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDAS) shortly. “I have spoken to the BDA commissioner in this respect and three sportspersons, Rehan Poncha, Shikha Tandon and Anup Sridhar, are likely to get a site each from BDA,” he said.

Vinayak wins

Vinayak Kulkarni of UVCE emerged champion in the Bangalore University Inter College chess tournament organised by the Smt. VHD Central Institute of Home Science over the last three days at the Govt. Home Science College here. Vinayak finished with 9.5 points and was followed by SJCC's Rajkumar S Singha with nine points.

Chris-Spo Fest

Christ University, Bangalore's inter-collegiate sports festival ‘Chris-Spo Fest' will be held at the Christ University campus from August.30. ABHA posts win

Anup (20th min.) and Mukesh (54th min.) helped ABHA defeat Ideal SC KGF 2-0 in a Travancore Cup hockey tournament match at Bangalore on Saturday.
