Don Bosco (Egmore) scripted an 18-run win over St. Bede’s in the final of the Vidya Mandir- Sportstar under-14 cricket tournament at the Amir Mahal ground here on Thursday. B. Ashwin (42, 5x4) of Don Bosco was adjudged man-of-the-match.

Electing to bat, Don Bosco posted 130 in 30 overs. On a wicket that was slow and offered appreciable turn, the St. Bede’s chase was marked by struggle. Opener Audhi Sachin was bowled off the first ball he faced, trying to smash off-spinner Hemanth Kumar over mid-wicket.

Don Bosco persisted with an all-spin attack that operated to a 7-2 field for most part, forcing the batsmen to target the leg side.

Frustrated by the slow run-rate, R. Adithya Rishi (16), trying to work captain and leg-spinner G. Karthick Shanmugam (two for 11) to the on-side, was bowled.

Soon after, opening batsman and birthday boy S. Abhishiek (29, 4x4) played a few fluent strokes and, along with P. Hemcharan (34, 1x4), put on 38. After Abhishiek departed, Hemcharan was left to wage a lone battle as there was hardly any partnership of significance.

Earlier, the left-handed Ashwin and M. Akram Khan (36, 3x4), both beneficiaries of missed chances, added 64 for the third wicket and helped Don Bosco set a fairly sizeable target. The prizes were given away by M. Venkataramana, former Test cricketer, Asif Ali, Diwan of Arcot, Suresh Srinivasan, Vice-President (Advertising), The Hindu,  N. Parthasarathy, Assistant Vice-President,  The Hindu  (Western Region), Bhavani Raghunandan, Principal, Vidya Mandir, and Shoba Raman, Vice-Principal, Vidya Mandir. Srinivasan announced a free subscription of Sportstar for six months for the winner and three months for the runner-up.

The scores: Don Bosco (Egmore) 130 for eight in 30 overs (B. Ashwin 42, Akram Khan 36, R. Adhitya Rishi three for 45) bt St. Bede’s 112 in 29.2 overs (S. Abhishiek 29, P. Hemcharan 34).

Special awards: Best all-rounder: Leo Sachin (Don Bosco); Best batsman: S. Abhishiek (St. Bede’s); Best bowler: P. Vidyut (Vidya Mandir); Promising cricketers: Ishwar Suresh (Vidya Mandir), Mohd. Adnan Khan (St. Bede’s), M. Akram Khan (Don Bosco), and Yak Sharath Sreekanth (Don Bosco).
