Coimbatore: Defending champion and overnight leader Ashbeer Singh Saini of Kapurthala carded a final round of 74 to retain the Lalit Suri Southern India junior golf title on Friday.

Bangalore’s Chikkarangappa, who came up with an impressive sub-par round of 71, tried his best to catch up with the leader but found the journey a bit too long to tread towards the end.

The 15-year-old Ashbeer set the tone early with a bogey and two birdies on the front-nine and extended his lead to seven shots over Chikkarangappa.

The back-nine, however, belonged to Chikkarangappa, who kept trimming the lead but could never come close to Ashbeer.

Vashist wins

Local boy Vashist Pawar played scintillating golf when it mattered most to emerge the category ‘B’ winner. It was a close fight between Shubhankar Sharma and Vashist but the former edged out the latter on the third play-off hole.
