CHENNAI: The Indian men's and women's teams booked semifinal berths in the Asian squash championships on Thursday. The men will clash against top-seeded Malaysia on Thursday, while the women will play Korea.

Pakistan and Kuwait will match up in the other men's semifinal. The second women's semifinal will be contested between Malaysia and Hong Kong China.

Dazzling display

Indian men earned the right of way into the semis with a 2-0 win over Hong Kong China. Playing first, Harinderpal Singh Sandhu put up a dazzling display to trounce Dick Lau in straight games.

Sandhu had three points for the first game at 10-7, but Lau saved a couple and benefited from a referring oversight on the third when his shot hit the tin unnoticed by the man in the chair. The Indian player succeeded in closing out the game 14-12 and went into overdrive in the next, mixing the pace and winning it 11-2.

Lau had a momentary revival in the third, but Sandhu sealed the game 11-9 to put India 1-0 ahead.

Up next, Saurav Ghosal ensured the redundancy of the third fixture with an 11-7, 12-10, 11-6 win over Max Lee.
