Panaji: Propelled by Abhishekh Bhadkar (45 and two for 10), South Zone beat defending champion West Zone by 26 runs on the opening day of J.K. Bose Trophy T20 tournament for sports journalists here on Thursday.

In another league match, North beat East by 41 runs. The tournament was inaugurated by V.M. Prabhu Desai, Executive Director, Sports Authority of Goa.

Desai hoped for continued support of the media and added that Goa was to host the National Games in 2011, Asian Beach Games in 2013 and the world Portuguese Games. “We hope for the support of media. I am surprised by the smart turnout here for the cricket matches.''

Meanwhile, leading sports journalists here have virtually given a ‘thumbs up' to Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, M.S. Gill and his efforts to put reins on the Indian Olympic Association and the various National sports federations.

Asked to comment on a simple one-liner ‘Do you agree with Sports Minister, M.S. Gill's move to limit tenures of National federation heads?,' over 99 per cent of the 70-odd journalists from 16 States attending the convention here felt that what the Sports Minister was doing was right.

On the opening day on Wednesday when asked, ‘Will the Indian Premier League continue to flourish even in the absence of the now suspended Lalit Modi?,' 94 per cent of the participants said ‘yes'.
