Salem: Host Salem gained a crucial 63-run first innings lead against Tiruvallur on the penultimate day of the TNCA under-16 inter-district cricket semifinal here on Saturday.

After making 310 for seven in 90 overs, the host bundled out the visitor for 247.

At stumps, Salem was 18 for no loss in five overs.

Hari, Varshini win titles

Hari Prasanna of Tirupur and Varshini of Youngsters Table Tennis Academy (Coimbatore) clinched the cadet boys’ and girls’ titles in the Combined District open table tennis tournament at Coimbatore on Saturday.

In the final, Hari defeated Nikil Nanda of Hosur 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, while Varshini notched up an 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 win over Sigappi.

Cup of joy for Chakola

Coimbatore’s Joseph. J. Chakola totalled two under 286 and emerged winner of the Aircel-PGTI 2009 final qualifying stage, which concluded at the Gurgaon Golden Greens Golf and Country Club on Friday.

Chakola fired a four under 68 in the final round and edged out his nearest rival Shiva Ram Shrestha (one under 287) of Nepal for the title.

Australia’s Anthony Paul Choat (three over 291) claimed the third position.

The top 44 from the final qualifying stage earned full cards for the 2009 season.
