INDORE: The qualifiers for the open main draw competitions were identified on Wednesday even as focus shifted to the next phase of the National badminton championship — the inter-State competition for the Rahimatoola Cup in the men’s section and the Chadha Cup in the women’s, starting on Thursday.

After the hectic sessions on the first day, the few who remained to contest in the final round on Wednesday provided quality fare. Some of them are already acknowledged talents like Rohan Castelino and Aditya Prakash, former and current junior National champions. Castelino accounted for Tamil Nadu’s Aditya Elango, who started off well but got bogged down by cramps later.

Aditya Prakash swept aside Delhi’s H. Kharbanda.

Watching the proceedings with keen interest was maestro Prakash Padukone, who had come on Tuesday evening for the formal inauguration. Despite Chetan Anand and Saina Nehwal not playing, the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board has enough depth, what with the cream of Indian talent among seniors and juniors in its ranks — Arvind Bhat, Anup Sridhar, P. Kashyap, Vidyasagar, Jwala Gutta, Shruthi Kurien, Aparna Balan and the like.

There is little then to suggest that PSPB will miss renewing the lease on both the trophies.
