THALASSERY: Thrissur came back from behind to lift the title in the State senior hockey championship at the Municipal stadium here on Monday.

Thrissur fought back from 0-2 down to upstage Thiruvananthapuram 6-4 via the tie-breaker.

Aneesh (19th) and Nikhil (22nd) put Thiruvananthapuram ahead at half-time.

But Saneesh scored the opening minute of the second half and T.C.Deepak grabbed a late equaliser in the 67th minute to force the tie-breaker.

In the tie-breaker, Noushad, Vinod, Deepak and Sijumon scored for Thrissur while only Chitresh and Aneesh could find the net for Thiruvananthapuram.

Defending champion SAI, Thrissur finished third after scoring a 2-0 win over Kannur. After a goalless first half, Nishanth (46th) and Rahul Krishna (50th) scored for the winner.

Mashood was chosen as the player of the tournament while the award for best forward went to T.C.Deepak. A.Vivek was chosen as the best goalkeeper while Veeramani picked up the award for the best defender.

Match drawn

At Kochi, Golden Threads FC drew with Cochin Port Trust 1-1 in the Cochin Premier League opener at the Maharaja’s Stadium on Monday.

Ibrahim Kutty gave Golden Threads the lead in the 32nd minute on an assist from D. Ron, but Joby struck the CPT equaliser in the 65th minute off a pass from C.A. Sanandh.

Kerala Football Association President K.M.I. Mather inaugurated the championship, while Ernakulam DFA President K. Babu presided over the function.

Athletics meet

The Southern Naval Command’s civilian athletics meet begins at the Command Stadium on Tuesday.

Civilians from Naval Ship Repair Yard, Material Organisation, Naval Aircraft Yard, Naval Armament Depot and INS Venduruthy will figure in the event.

Rear Admiral H.C.S. Bisht, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, will inaugurate the meet tomorrow afternoon.

Inter-college basketball

At Aluva, the Carmel Trophy all-India inter-collegiate basketball tournament for men and women begins at the Carmel Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Some of the leading colleges, including Chennai’s Jeppiar, Thiruvananthapuram’s Mar Ivanios, Mumbai’s Fr. Agnel, Coimbatore’s Karunya and PSGR Krishnammal and Aluva’s St. Xavier’s will figure in the event.
