CHENNAI: A goal apiece by its two Ivory Coast imports helped league leader Nethaji Sports Club defeat Arrows 2-0 in the St. Joseph’s-Chennai Football Association senior division league, here on Sunday.

After a drab first-half, Issodf Hetiereyo headed in a Selvendran free-kick in added time to give Nethaji the lead. Even though Arrows combined well and pieced together a few good moves, a goal eluded it.

Its best chance came midway in the first-half when M.P. Rajan tapped the ball to John Nnanna, whose aerial shot was nabbed by the retreating goalkeeper.

Nethaji struck again in the 71st minute. Prowling the box, Doubia Mamadou received a long pass from Gnana Sugan in the midfield, and lobbed the ball over the napping goalkeeper to find the net.

Meanwhile, K. Melcure Raj’s brace enabled Rangoon FC beat RBI 2-1 in the first division league. Jayakumar scored for RBI. In another match, Chennai Soccer beat Perambur Blues 1-0. M. Ramkumar netted the only goal of the match.

Bangalore DFA in final

Bangalore DFA entered the final of the Don Bosco-Fr. McFerran Trophy football tournament with a 2-1 semifinals win over a ten-man Indian Bank on Sunday.

Striker Naveen Babu scored the winner two minutes from time, steering home at the near post after Regin’s initial shot from the edge of the area took a deflection off centre half Hemanta Singh.

Nine minutes earlier, Indian Bank centre half Ignatius Sagaya Sathish had been sent off for his second bookable offence, a two-footed lunge on Bangalore midfielder Sampath Kumar. His first yellow came after he pushed Bangalore fullback Sugander off the ball on the edge of the Indian Bank box in the 69th minute.

Bangalore’s first goal had come when B. Prakash scored off a penalty on the half hour mark awarded after a shot from Naveen had struck Ignatius’s arm in the vicinity of the goal.

Indian Bank had taken an early lead after Gunasekar had slotted home off a Nirmal Kumar cross from the right in the fifth minute.
