Kannur drew with host Kasargod in the North Zone under-19 inter-district cricket tournament here on Wednesday.
The visitor survived stiff resistance from the Kasargod tail to snatch the first innings lead. Azharudeen scored 91 and with the help of the tailenders, frustrated Kannur, but Fabid Farooq (four for 57) and Sherjas (three for 40) struck crucial blows to give their side the vital lead.
At Kozhikode, Kozhikode took the honours in the drawn match against Malappuram, which conceded a huge first innings lead.
The scores: Kannur 284 for nine & 97 for three in 27 overs (Shamsan Siraj 59) drew with Kasargod 238 in 68 overs (Azharudeen 91, Faiz 37, Rifai 31, Fabid Farooq four for 57, Sherjas three for 40); Kozhikode 268 & 297 for seven in 68 overs (Akhil Farid 83, Sachin Dev 51, Dwaj Raichura 47) drew with Malappuram 148 in 40 overs (Vyshnav 45, K.C. Akshay three for 22, Shinas Hashim three for 22).
Thrissur in command
At Ernakulam, Thrissur was in command against Idukki at the end of the first day's play in the Central Zone under-19 cricket tournament.
Batting first, Idukki was bundled out for 36 as Godson picked up six for 19. In reply, Thrissur rode on Ramees' 91 to reach 201 for seven at stumps.
At Kalamassery, the opening day's honours went to Palakkad after the visitor restricted Ernakulam to 187 in the first innings. Barring Basil Thampy (99 n.o.), none of the host batsmen could find their feet against Aquib Fazal who took five for 39. In reply, Palakkad had reached 107 for three at stumps.
