The hard-earned win against Kolkata Knight Riders was a pleasing reminder that his team has the ability to “adjust to difficult conditions”, said the Kings XI Punjab captain Adam Gilchrist here on Sunday.
“We played under difficult conditions,” Gilchirst said while hinting at the turning track offered by the host. “It is really pleasing to know that we can adjust to some extent to all conditions.”
The KXIP skipper said though his team's batting top-order could not “adjust much” to the conditions, its bowling was excellent. “I feel the boundaries in the last two overs were excellent contribution that took us to a defendable total,” Gilchirst said praising the batting efforts of Piyush Chawla and Harmeet Singh.
When asked what turned the match in his favour, Gilchirst said it was a mixture of episodes that slowly changed the momentum of the game.
“The partnership (between Chawla and Harmeet) at the end and excellent spell of Chawla with the ball got us back into the game. Overall it was consistent fielding and a disciplined bowling that got the match back to us,” Gilchirst said.
The Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir looked visibly distraught. “If you cannot chase down 135 you do not deserve to win,” said Gambhir. “I am just not happy with the performance. We should have chased it down.”
Dismissing any talk about the nature of the wicket, Gambhir said the Eden wicket was very good and the problem lay with his team's poor response to the situation.
“Let's not talk about the wicket. It was very good wicket to bat on as the ball was coming on to the bat quite well,” he said.
“We need to take some hard decisions now if we want get our performance right in the future matches,” Gambhir added.
The KKR skipper said one of the team's batting mainstays Yusuf Pathan should start delivering now. “He (Pathan) needs to deliver. He is a big match player and we hope he comes up with some good scores in future,” Gambhir said.
