HYDERABAD: Syed Md. Shoaib, the 22-year-old Hyderabad Ranji fast bowler, has been selected by the Deccan Chargers to play in the second edition of the DLF Indian Premier League scheduled to commence next month.
Shoaib, who plays for Andhra Bank in local league, has taken 24 wickets this Ranji season for Hyderabad.
Apparently, the Chargers selectors were impressed with his seven-wicket spell against Andhra in the K.S. Subbaiah Pillai Trophy in Vizag recently which helped Hyderabad obtain second place.
Shoaib was earlier called for selection trials by the Kolkata Knight Riders but could not make it since he got the call on the very day of the selections. “But now, looking back, I have no regrets,” he says.
“I am delighted to be in the Chargers team. It will be a great honour to play alongside some of the finest cricketers like Adam Gilchrist and V.V.S. Laxman. The IPL stint should benefit my bowling as I will try to pick up a few tricks,” he said.
“This should also help me in realising my ultimate goal of playing for the country. I will not be found wanting in commitment and hard work. This is surely a golden chance to progress as far as my career is concerned,” Shoaib said.
He is also eagerly looking forward to the chance to meet his role model — former Australian fast bowling great Glen McGrath. “That should be a memorable moment in my life,” exclaimed Shoaib.
