DINDIGUL: Armed Police, Chennai, lifted the Rtn. PHF. G. Sundararajan Mani Vizha Trophy defeating Port Trust, Tuticorin, 65-60 in the last match of the semifinal round robin league of the 12th annual State-level basketball tournament here on Wednesday night.

Armed Police emerged with an all-win record and Port Trust finished runner-up, losing only to Armed Police. Railway Cooperative Society, Chennai, finished third defeating Tex City BC, Karur, 82-80 for its only win.

The results (League): Armed Police 65 (Robin 22, Rajendran 28) bt Port Trust 60 (Santhosh 22, Prabu 12); Rly. Coop. Society 82 (Suresh 20, Pechimuthu 28) bt Tex City BC 80 (Raja 25, Ganesh 22).

Kanyakumari advances

Kanyakumari moved into the pre-quarterfinals of the 28th Tamil Nadu State junior inter-district football championship conducted by Star Muslim Football Club with a 3-1 victory over Dindigul at Ilayangudi on Thursday.

Ruban scored off a cross from Chris Antony in the 38th minute to put Kanyakumari ahead. The lead was short-lived as Sivakumar equalised with a 20-yards range shot for Dindigul in the 41st minute. Chris Antony scored the second goal for Kanyakumari, in the 74th minute, connecting a free kick taken by Shinu and Shinu completed the tally converting a spot-kick two minutes from close.

The other match between Pudukottai and Dharmapuri was not played as the latter did not turn up.

Thirunagar HC triumphs

Thirunagar Hockey Club won the title in the Southern Districts Hockey tournament conducted by Vadipatti Hockey Talent Development Centre and S.D.A.T defeating G.K. Motors Finance Club 4-2 in the final at Vadipatti on Thursday.

Sathyaseelan scored a brace (24th and 40th minute), and Balakrishnan (45th) and Kalidas (50th) scored one each for Thirunagar. Karthik and Ramesh scored for G.K. Motors.

In the semifinals, G.K. Motors Finance Club beat Reserve Line Sports Club 4-2 while Thirunagar HC prevailed 6-5 (via tie-breaker) over Hockey Talent Development Centre, Vadipatti.

Comfortable win

At Tiruchi, Sagar's half-century helped National College score a comfortable 65 run victory over Associated CC in the RKV invitation cricket tournament on Thursday.

The scores: R.K.V 'A' CC 129 all out in 27.5 overs (Taufiq four for 17) lost to Kaveri CC 130 for six in 22.4 overs.

National College 187 for six in 30 overs (Sagar 52, Mohanbabu 44) bt Associated CC 122 all out in 23 overs.

Win for Cosmopolitan

Two second-half goals by Ganesh and Satish helped Cosmopolitan FC defeat Kallakudi Football club 2-0 in the Tiruchi district Football Association second division 'A' zone league match on Thursday.

Other results: Lucky star Football Club (Ram Kumar, Ramachandran) 2 bt Young men Sporting Football Club (Morris) 1.

Rovers Football Club (Lazer, Comroon) 2 bt Grasshoppers Football Club 0.

AVVM SPC triumphs

At Tiruvaiyur, AVVM Sri Pusham College (Poondi) defeated Amalraj MHSS (Tiruvayuru) 25-10, 25-12 to win the final at the volleyball tournament (level-1) organised by the Thanjavur unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. Srinivasa Rao HSS (Tiruvaiyar) took third place.

Body building

The Coimbatore District Amateur Body Building Association and Jai Hanuman Gymnasium will jointly conduct the Mr. Kovai North 2006 body building competition at the Periya Vinayagar Kovil Thidal, Coimbatore, on January 14 at 6 p.m. About 200 participants from 25 gymnasiums are expected to participate.
