HYDERABAD: The Lanco-JHIC all-India ranking tennis tournament for boys and girls (under-16), co-sponsored by Bhagya Ventures and Coca-Cola, will be hosted by Jubilee Hills International Centre from January 7, according to K.R. Raman, tournament director.

Mr. Raman informed the media on Thursday that a record number of 200 entries were expected for the event, which would be conducted on two synthetic courts (for girls) and two clay courts (for boys). Stressing on the importance of the tournament, Mr. Raman recalled that Sania Mirza had won the first three editions before stepping onto the elite circuit. This year also the winner would collect 70 AITA points, while the runner-up would get 50, the semifinalists 40 each and quarterfinalists 30 each.

The tournament director said competitions would be held in doubles in both categories with the qualifying rounds commencing on Friday. The organisers have decided to pay a daily allowance of Rs. 850 each to the players who figure in the singles and doubles main draw. Lankan airlines' venture

Sri Lankan Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the M.L. Jaisimha 365 Cricket Academy to promote the game in a big way in Colombo. N. Prabhakaran, Regional Manager, Sri Lankan Airlines, and Jayanti Jaisimha, wife of late M.L. Jaisimha, signed the one-year deal. Trainees spotted by the academy would be given a special package to tour not only Sri Lanka but also any part of the world.

"Essentially, we are looking to play a key role in the talent spotting here and also promote tourism back home," Mr. Prabhakaran said. Ms. Jayanthi hoped the MoU would usher in a new chapter for the academy, which she reminded was a dream of Jaisimha. Vignesh in quarterfinals

P.C. Vignesh scored a fluent 9-1 win against D.R.C. Kiran in the men's singles pre-quarterfinals of the Moin-ud-Dowla State-ranking tennis tournament at Secunderabad Club.

Hyderabad (under-17) posted a five-wicket win against Leicestershire Juniors XI in a friendly cricket match here.

The scores: Leicestershire Jrs 149 in 42.2 overs (Tom Flowers 44, Rishi Patel 31, Kushal P. Jilla four for 11) lost to Hyderabad under-17 151 for five in 30.1 overs (Azmath Ali 35, Kushal P. Jilla 43, Praneet Kumat 31 n.o., Anish Patel four for 31).

Easy for Vivekananda

Vivekananda ITS, Bommakal, recorded an eight-wicket win against Christu Jyothi Engineering College in the SR Champions Trophy inter-engineering colleges cricket tournament at Warangal on Thursday, according to information received here.

The scores: Christu Jyothi Engg College 103 for nine lost to Vivekananda ITS, Bommakal, 104 for two loss; Srinivasa ITS, Nizamabad, 112 lost to JBR Engg College, Hyd, 114 for eight; SRR Karepally, Khammam, 95 for nine lost to Ganapathi Engg College, Warangal, 96 for one (Sandeep 45).

Victory for Rajyot XI

Rajyot XI defeated Dudes XI by 200 runs in the Jai Bhagwathi Trophy cricket tournament here on Thursday.
