BANGALORE: Indian Campers, sharpened by strategic play and execution of drills practised during training, prevailed 57-55 against a dogged Karnataka State team in an exhibition basketball match at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here this evening.

The India basketball team in training at the SAI South Centre here since mid-January for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games had its first outing beyond the SAI campus and understandably looked ragged and rusty.

But the men were clearly under instructions to work out the moves practised at the camp. Robinson, Murali Krishna and Subash Shenoy clearly played tentatively and Talwinderjeet Singh was for once overshadowed by former India captain B.S. Goutham in a one-to-one situation of ball handling and play making.

Karnataka did have its moments. With Sanjay Raj, a camper, turning up for the State team and Srinivasa Gowda proving effective under the boards, it was the State team that led till half-time at 32-27.

A pep talk by coach Zoran Lukic saw a charged up India, with a few quicksilver fast breaks and percentage conversions from Shiv Kumar and Tridip cruising along in the third and fourth quarters, although there was a late fightback from the State cagers.

Two more exhibition matches are slated for the Indian team on February 14 and 15.

The results: Indian Campers 57 (Talwinderjeet 15, Shiv Kumar 12, Yadwinder 10) bt Karnataka State 55 (Murli Mohan 16, B.S. Goutham 15, Srinivasa Naik 12, Srinivasa Gowda 8).
