BANGALORE: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) defeated Madras Engineering Group (Boys) 3-1 in the Travancore Cup hockey tournament on Saturday. Kishore fired a hat-trick for HAL, scoring in the 21st, 37th and 50th minutes. Somaiah reduced the margin for MEG (Boys) in the 36th minute.
Earlier, Maharatta Light Infantry beat Indian Telephone Industries by a similar margin. Rajendra Kumar's fourth minute penalty corner conversion gave ITI the lead but it proved to be short-lived as Kalyan (19th), Shinde (31st) and Dasar (34th) scored for MLI.
In another fixture, Sports Authority of India and Karnataka State Police literally fought out a pitched battle to end up with a 3-3 scoreline. Raghunath scored twice off penalty corners for SAI (9th and 14th) and Vivek Ramakrishnan (26th) also scored. Mohan Kumar (20th off a penalty corner), Sundar (28th) and Laxman Rao (47th) scored for the State cops.
Spice Inrange golf winners
The team comprising Karthik Padmanabhan, Sandeep Angresh, Ian Pragnell and Sujith Somasundar bagged the nett (strokeplay) trophy in the Spice Inrange Golf tournament played at the Eagleton Golf resort here on Saturday. In the Spice Ball Score gross section, the foursome of B.M. Karunesh, R.P. Ramlingam, Chetan Meda and C.S. Murali was the winner.
The team that took top honours in the tournament comprised of Ramnivas Boob, Rajendra Guttar, Manoj Salian and Madhu Khatri. Runners-up in this section (gross) strokeplay section were Atul Khanna, Ranjan Biswas, Kawal Sood and Anil Sood.
Spice Telecom COO Navin Kaul, Metlife MD Venkatesh Mysore, Caterpillar director Graham Lythgoe, Microsoft India director Karthik Padmanabhan and Wipro vice-president Madhu Katri were some of the prominent corporate bosses who took part in the tournament.
Spice Communications Pvt Ltd CEO Prakash Nanani gave away the prizes.
Syndicate Bank earns draw
Ragotham Navali's unbeaten 73 helped Syndicate Bank earn a draw against Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) in a KSCA Group II, first division league match here recently.
The scores: RWF 325 for six in 55 overs (S.R. Deepu 78, Vinay Kumar 72, Praveen Pawar 53 not out, Praveen Kumar 53) drew with Syndicate Bank 139 for three in 34 overs (Ragotham Navali 73 not out, P. Ramesh Rao 40 not out); AGORC 285 for four in 60 overs (Sapthagirish 75, Ramamurthy 57, Chandraprakash 52) drew with KSFSB 130 for three in 28 overs (M. Jayakumar 47).
Abhishek's knock in vain
A Man-of-the-Match performance by Abhishek (94) went in vain as Sir M.V. Institute of Technology lost to M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology by 16 runs in the final of Viswesvaraya University of Technology's inter-collegiate north zone cricket final here on Friday.
Batting first, MSRIT made 225 in 40 overs, with Sandeep Murthy and Amber Agarwal hitting half centuries. In reply, MVIT managed only 209 for six in 40 overs. Abhishek gave his team a flying start but after his dismissal, MVIT lost some quick wickets and struggled to sustain the run rate.
