Hyderabad: The fourth World Military Games will be held here from October 14 to 17, 2007. The details were announced at a press conference addressed by Brig. Gen. Dr. Gianni Gola of Italy, president of the CISM, which is a French acronym for the International Military Sports Council, as well as officers of the Indian army including Lt. Gen. Ashok Kapur, chief of staff, Southern Command and Maj. Gen. Ahluwalia, President, SSCB. The Chairman of SAAP and its VC-MD were also present.
Gola said that the CISM has a membership of 127 countries and he hoped most of these countries would send their teams to take part in the meet. The Brussels-based CISM is the second largest sports body in the world after the IOC and it conducted the first WMG in Rome in 1995, the second in Zagreb in 1999 and the third in Catania (Italy) in 2003.
Competitions will be held in 15 disciplines out of which two sailing and triathlon will be held in Goa. The other 13 events will be held here. About 6,000 participants are expected to arrive for the meet and their accommodation will be arranged at Gachibowli, the Army Cantonment in Secunderabad and also some hotels in the twin cities.
Gola said that he had visited the city during the Afro-Asian Games in 2003 and was impressed with the facilities. However, new venues will have to be created for military pentathlon, parachuting and shooting.
The conduct of these games would be a synergy between the armed forces, the Government of Andhra Pradesh and various National sports federations as also Central Government agencies, he said. Several Olympians will be seen in action during the meet.
