Kolkata: Indian Airlines started its campaign in style beating Karnataka XI 3-1 in a quarterfinal league Group B match of the IndianOil 111th Beighton Cup hockey here on Tuesday.

The Airlines team, which was seeded directly into the quarterfinals, did not face much resistance from the Karnataka combine. Lazarus Barla found the lead, converting a penalty corner for Indian Airlines in the 26th minute. Karnataka drew level through another penalty corner, with Chetan Krishna converting in the 28th minute.

Indian Airlines dominated the second session and found the mark twice to garner full points from the match. Star striker Dhanraj Pillay brought his stick-work to good effect to reclaim the lead for Indian Airlines in the 45th minute before Virender Lakra rounded off the scoring off a penalty stroke in the 60th minute.

In two Group A matches, Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) downed its own State police team, Punjab Police, 3-0, while BSF, Jalandhar, got the better of local side Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) 2-0. Parminder Singh and Baljit Singh Chandi struck in quick succession to help PSB race to a 2-0 lead by the 11th minute. The former scored his second goal in the 64th minute to complete the tally for PSB. The BSF outfit won its match against CESC from two first session goals scored by Habil Topno and Ranjit Singh.
