SILVERSTONE (England): Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso took it easy on the first day of practice for the British Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion did just three laps in his Ferrari and current world champion Alonso didn't do any timed laps in his Renault while the test drivers did the bulk of the work in the opening morning session.
Then in the afternoon Alonso edged Schumacher although neither went all out. Alonso and Schumacher have won six of the seven races this season, including the last five.
Alexander Wurz of Williams had the top time of 1:21.946 as test drivers took most of the top spots. In the second practice Robert Kubica of Red Bull led the testers at 1:21.082.
Japan's Sakon Yamamoto, a new test driver for the Super Aguri team, was the slowest during the day, 1:27.908.
Schumacher had a time of 1:22.925 on the 5.1-kilometer (3.2-mile) Silverstone circuit, fifth overall in the morning then went 1:22.825 in the afternoon for eighth.
Alonso had 1:22.603 for his best just ahead of Schumacher. Alonso's teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella, had the second fastest time of 1:22.294 in a minimum three laps.
There is another session on Saturday morning before qualifying Saturday afternoon. Sunday's race is 60 laps. AP
