Chandigarh: Title favourite West Bengal got a big jolt as it suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tripura in a crucial Group II quarterfinal league match of the junior National girls' (under-17) football championship here on Thursday.

West Bengal took the lead in the 15th minute, but Tripura reversed the tide with an attacking game and equalised through Anita Debbarma in the 21st minute. In the second half, Shyamali Debbarma netted the winner for Tripura in the 52nd minute.

It was Tripura's first victory in its second match, while West Bengal lost its first encounter. West Bengal had earlier defeated UP in its first quarterfinal league match.

Tripura next meets Uttar Pradesh, while West Bengal will cross swords with last year's runner-up Orissa in the last league matches on July 22.

Orissa thrashed Uttar Pradesh 8-0 for its second successive win. With six points from two matches, Orissa has increased its chances of qualifying from Group II.

Sradhanjali Sahoo (73rd, 82nd), Preyenka Sahoo (50th and 63rd), Lolchana Munda (15th, 70th), Santoseni Oram (45th) and Jhele Munda (10th) scored for Orissa. UNI
