BANGALORE: The Hutch inter-State seven-a-side rugby championship will be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament, organised by the Indian Rugby Football Union and South India Rugby Football Association, will determine the top eight teams for the National Games to be held in October.

"India will field a rugby team in the 2010 Commonwealth Games for the first time and it will offer immense exposure for our team as it will compete with some of the best squads such as England and Australia. Our team-building process will start in right earnest with this meet in Bangalore," said SIRFA vice-president Anthony Gerald Prabhu.

Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Delhi are the fancied teams in the event, which is being conducted in the inter-state basis for the first time.

Pratap on top

M. Pratap of Municipal Sports Club, Davangere, came to party on the opening day of the 32nd men's State senior powerlifting championships, which got underway at the Town Hall in Mangalore on Friday.

With a total effort of 522.5kg effort in squat, bench press and dead lift in the 56kg category, Pratap left his competitors gasping. Vijaya Gatti (465kg) of Balanjaneya Gymnasium, Mangalore, and Abdul Rub (430kg) of Hercules Gymnasium, Kundapur, finished second and third respectively.

The results: Men: 52kg: 1. H. Idinabba (Balanjaneya, 430kg); 2. H. Harish (Durga Gymnasium, Mani, 315kg); 3. Velu Aadi (Balanjaneya, 230kg).

56kg: 1. M. Pratap (Municipal Sports Club, 522.5kg); 2. Vijaya Gatti (Balanjaneya, 465kg); 3. Abdul Rub (Hercules, 430kg).

60kg: 1. Razvi Khan (Municipal SC, 595kg); 2. U. Laxman (Balanjaneya, 520kg); 3. Santhosh Ullal (Shakti Bharath Vyayama Shaale, Thokottu, 407.5kg). 67.5kg: 1. Devadas Kulur (Balanjaneya, 547.5); 2. Prashanth (Veeramaruthi, Koteshwara, 547.5kg); 3. Sebastian (KSP, 537.5kg).

Big win for FPS

Harshith's unbeaten 107 and Shantanu's five-wicket haul set up Florence Public School's (FPS) 115-run victory over Holy Cross School in a Himalaya Cup under-15 inter-school tournament match here on Friday. FPS scored 203 for seven in 45 overs and bundled out Holy Cross for 88 in 20.4 overs.
