CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, on Monday, honoured sportspersons for winning medals in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and the recently concluded World shooting championship in Zagreb.

Athletes Manjeet Kaur and Rajwinder Kaur were felicitated in absentia as they are away in Ukraine on a training programme for the Asian Games.

World champion shooters Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Abhinav Bindra were among those presented the cash awards. Olympian Bindra was given a cheque of Rs. 39.5 lakhs, including Rs. 21 lakhs for winning the gold at the World championship in Zagreb

Manavjit Singh Sandhu was presented a cheque of Rs. 34.33 lakhs. , including Rs. 31.33 lakhs for winning one gold and one silver medal in the World championships.

Avneet Kaur Sidhu (Rs. 10.25 lakhs), Mansher Singh (Rs. 7.33 lakhs), Amanpreet Singh (Rs. 2.33 lakhs) were the other shooters who were given cash awards.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist weightlifter Geeta Rani of Central Reserve Police Force was given a cheque of Rs. 7 lakhs. Commonwealth Games silver medallist Vicky Batta received a cheque of Rs. 5 lakhs. A sum of Rs. 1.16 crores was disbursed among the outstanding sportspersons at a function held at Taj Hotel in Sector 17 here. Special Correspondent
