NEW DELHI: The President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Suresh Kalmadi, has called upon the All India Tennis Association (AITA), Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi to work out a truce ahead of India's preparation for the Asian Games in Doha.
"World-class stars like Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes are an integral part of our contingent," Mr. Kalmadi said in a release issued on Wednesday.
He said he had spoken to the AITA Secretary-General, Anil Khanna, Bhupathi and Paes and that the three promised him they would resolve the issue, as it was a matter of national prestige.
The controversy erupted when Bhupathi said in Mumbai that he had played his last for India.
"India will be hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and tennis is going to be included at our request in the programme. So we need to present our best challenge in Doha and at the Beijing Olympics," said Mr. Kalmadi.
The 17th All India Surjit Kaur memorial table tennis tournament will be held at the NDMC Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from October 24 to 27. Entries close with Mr. Hukam Singh at 6/2543 Beadonpura, Karol Bagh, or Mr. S. P. Mishra at Nehru Stadium Coaching Centre or Mr. R. Sharma at the venue on October 18.
