NEW DELHI: Gagan Narang shot below par in the qualification phase and finished fifth among 11 shooters in the air rifle competition of the prestigious World Cup finals in Granada, Spain, on Wednesday.

Gagan shot a series of 100, 100, 100, 98, 99 and 98 for a 595 in the qualification series and followed that up with a 102.7 in the final.

He had an impressive all-10 series of 10.4, 10.1, 10.0, 10.1, 10.4, 10.4, 10.0, 10.6, 10.2, 10.5 and 10.7 but that was of no avail, as he had conceded far too much of a lead in the preliminary phase.

The gold went to Thomas Farnik of Austria who shot a final World record score of 703.1, while Chinese shooters swept the other two medals.
