KOCHI: Jaisal Kohli Mariwala gave Kerala a rare National circuit title by winning the under-14 boys section of the RSC-MBTA AITA Talent Series tennis tournament here on Friday evening. The 14-year-old Kochi youngster defeated his RSC clubmate Aditya Bhat 6-3, 6-4 for his maiden AITA trophy.
Jaisal, a 10th standard student at the Choice School here, also bagged the doubles title, partnering Aditya. Earlier, Tamil Nadu's top-seeded Karan Kurup won the under-12 boys crown, crushing Gujarat's second-seeded Anvit Bendre 6-1, 6-2.
Jaisal plays Aditya almost every day, he also enjoys a superior head-to-head record against his younger opponent. So, he did not have to search for the chinks in Aditya's armour, he just had to attack his opponent's backhand to win points.
The match was played at a relaxed pace for a major part but early in the second set, the two traded breaks. The two talented youngsters were engaged in an interesting crosscourt duel in the second set and there were some lovely forehand top-spinners from Aditya but there were moments when he hit out wildly too.
