INDORE: Commonwealth champion Samaresh Jung redeemed himself after a modest showing in the Doha Asian Games as he won the men's 50m free pistol gold beating his challengers from the Navy, at the 50th National shooting championship at the Reoti Ranges here on Friday.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) shooter was just one point ahead of Omkar Singh going into the final. Jung (552) opened the final with a 9.8 before reeling out 10.4, 10.7, 10.2, 10.1, 10.0, 9.2, 9.2, 10.2 and 9.2 for a total of 99.0 well ahead of Omkar (94.9). Jung's total of 651.0 was 5.1 points better than Omkar, though Navy did well to claim the bronze medal ahead of the traditional powerhouse, Army that had four of the eight shooters in the final.

Navy won the team gold with a total of 1630 points, four ahead of Indian Airlines and Army, which was third with 1605. Railways struck its first shooting gold when Anisa Sayyed surprised established shooters to win the women's 25m sports pistol event.

Anisa tallied a total of 771.9 after scoring an impressive 198.9 in the 20-shot final to set a new National record in the total score.
