New Delhi: Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal survived a scare from Hye Youn Hwang of Korea before reaching the semifinals of the Indonesian Open Super Series at Jakarta on Friday.

The World No. 8, Saina, defeated 18th-ranked Hwang 21-7, 13-21, 21-15 in a tough women’s singles quarterfinal that lasted 45 minutes.

Sixth-seeded Saina will next face seventh seed Chinese Lan Lu in Saturday’s last-four clash. Lu beat second seed Yihan Wang in the other quarterfinal.

Saina made short work of Hwang in the first game as the Korean could not read the Indian’s game. In the second game, however, the Korean bounced back and after levelling 7-7, opened up a lead of 10-7. Saina was made to do the catching up job as Hwang pocketed the game quite easily.

In the decider, Saina was lagging 5-8 when she unleashed a flurry of smashes to pocket five straight points and grab the lead at 10-8 before downing her rival. — PTI
