Chennai: In a pulsating tussle that stretched the power of endurance and skill of the players, Southern Railway managed to overwhelm the defending champion, Indian Overseas Bank, in the men’s section on the opening day of the Panimalar-P. John Memorial all-India volleyball tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Tuesday. S. Railway won 31-29, 21-25, 27-25, 16-25, 18-16.

From the first serve it was an exciting contest for the spectators. Outstanding for Railway team was Vijesh while Naveen played a prominent part for IOB.

Bora’s effort in vain

In the women’s contest, Southern Railway beat Central Railway 25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, notwithstanding the fine display put in by Central’s Priyanka Bora.

K. Radhakrishnan, ADGP (L & O) inaugurated the tournament in the presence of Walter Devaram of Nellai Friends, S. Davidson. DIG, Zonal Director (NCB), and chief sponsor, Sakthi Kumar of Panimalar Engineering College.

Eight men’s teams — IOB, VFI Youth, Southern Railway, Cochin Port, BPCL, Indian Bank, Utrachal Club (Dehra Dun) and Panimalar — are in the fray, while Western Railway, Southern, Alphonsa Collge, Kerala, Central Railway and Dr. Sivanthi are the participants in the women’s section.

Umpires’ examination

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association umpires’ examination for 2009 will be held on June 14 at Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchi.

Candidates from Chennai, Tiruvallur and Vellore will write the examination in Chennai, those from Coimbatore, Salem and Namakkal at Coimbatore, those from Madurai, Sivaganga, Thoothukudi and Nagapattnam at Madurai. Hall tickets will be despatched shortly.

Cricket coaching camp

Reddy’s Cricket Academy will conduct a regular weekend coaching camp for boys and girls between the age of seven and 16 at Reddy’s Ground in Tambaram beginning June 6.
