CHENNAI: Squash ace Joshna Chinappa won the third WISPA title of her career when she defeated home favourite Low Wee Wern in the final of the $ 16,000 NSC series event on Saturday in Kuala Lumpur.
In an exciting match that went the full distance, the Indian clawed back from two games down to win on extra points 6-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 17-15.
A trainee of the Indian Squash Academy (erstwhile ICL academy), Chennai, Joshna, currently ranked 41 in the world, was seeded fourth in this tournament. In her earlier rounds she defeated Miranda Ranieri (Can) 3-0 and then accounted for second seeded Sharon Wee of Malaysia in a marathon session in the semifinals. Joshna won that 11-6, 8-11, 14-16, 11-8, 11-8. In the other half, Low had defeated the top seed Delia Arnold of Malaysia to move to the title round. The Indian’s earlier two successes too were in Malaysia.
Jubilant over her victory, Joshna, in a message said: “It was a tough match and I had to play well to come back from two games down. I feel I am mentally fitter and stronger now.
