MUMBAI: The prize money component for Indian athletes, men and women, taking part in the full marathon and finishing first in the Indians category has been raised from $2,500 to $6,000 for the 7th Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, scheduled to be held on January 17, 2010.

The elite runners will earn $35,000 this year, an increase over the 2009 allocation of $31,000.

Actor John Abraham, event ambassador, unveiled the online registrations for participants on Thursday.

August 18, 2009 is designated as the closing date for entries or whenever running places are full, whichever is earlier.

Entry fee for the full marathon and half marathon is Rs. 300 and Rs. 200 respectively.

The reasoning behind an early registration deadline is to provide competitors with confirmed entries, more time to train for the event, informed Vivek Singh of Procam International during a media briefing.

It is mandatory for the participants to wear the chip and facilitate recording of timings. The event is held under the aegis of Athletics Federation of India. — Special Correspondent
