NEW DELHI: The Hindustan Football Club coach, Bernard Oparanozie, was livid as his team made an exit from the Osian’s Durand Cup football tournament following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Border Security Force here on Thursday.
Hindustan dominated but failed to finish its moves and faded in second session when the players failed to match the endurance of the BSF team. BSF earned one good chance and capitalised on it one minute from the end, leaving Bernard a frustrated man.
“We paid for the indiscipline of two local players,” thundered Bernard. Without naming them, he said, “these players skipped the training session and it showed in their performance. I don’t want to make any excuses but our strikers (Daniel and Nathan) were off-colour too. Daniel was nursing an injury and Nathan couldn’t convert the chances. I give credit to BSF for the win.” The lone goal came through the hard work of Avinash Thapa, who sent in a firm cross which slipped out of goalkeeper Santosh Das’s grip for Gurjeet Singh Atwal to slam it in.
The result: Hindustan FC 0 lost to BSF 1 (Gurjeet Singh Atwal 89). — Special Correspondent
