THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar distributed the SAI’s sports scholarship awards at a function held at the VJT hall here on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to make Kerala a model State for sports in the country. He said the government was determined to improve infrastructure facilities and sports would be made a part of the school curriculum soon.

The Minister said it was a matter of great pride for the State as it was included in the Asian Football Confederation’s ‘Vision India’ project.

The Minister also lauded the role played by SAI in nurturing talent in the State.

M.S. Varghese, deputy director of SAI, welcomed the gathering and said the awards were given to sportspersons who were not part of any of SAI or sports council’s schemes.

In all Rs. 19 lakhs was distributed as cash awards to 218 sportspersons.

Binu felicitated

International athlete K.M. Binu, who received the Arjuna Award recently, was felicitated by his employer, Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax, at the Central Excise Kochi headquarters in Kochi on Thursday evening.

A.S.R. Nair, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise (Kerala Zone), presided over the function and presented a memento to Binu. Excise Commissioner S.N. Balakrishnan, Commissioner (Appeals) Biswajit Dutta, Customs Commissioner D.D. Ingty and Development Commissioner (Cochin Special Economic Zone) C.J. Mathew also honoured the ace athlete.

Don Bosco in last four

The host Don Bosco SSS (Vaduthala) defeated St. Aloysius (Palluruthy) 1-0 and entered the semifinals of the all-Kerala ICSE-ISC schools football tournament which began in Kochi on Thursday.

K. Babu, MLA, inaugurated the two-day tournament.

Shiaz scalps six

Shiaz grabbed six wickets for eight runs as Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, brushed aside SBOA (Chittoor) by 94 runs and entered the quarterfinals of the 21st Refinian Cup inter-school cricket tournament at the Cochin Refineries School Ground, Ambalamugal, on Thursday.
