KOLKATA: Defending champion Kingfisher East Bengal suffered a jolt to its aspirations of retaining the Sahara IFA Kolkata premier division league football title when it lost to Mohammedan Sporting by the odd goal in three here on Saturday.
The loss means East Bengal (22) is two points behind leader McDowell Mohun Bagan (24) after the 10th round. Mohammedan Sporting’s third win enabled it to reach 12 points.
After the two teams shared a goal each in the first-half, Mohammedan Sporting proved to be the better side in the second half. Mohammedan Sporting went ahead very early in the game as Adebayo Tokunbo Adewusi scored from a dead ball situation from the left.
Midway through the first-half, Edmilson got the equaliser for East Bengal. The match-clincher came via Kalia Kulothungan, who pushed home a East Bengal custodian’s save that rebounded off the post. — Special Correspondent
