CHENNAI: Dinesh Karthik, a member of the Indian squad that won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 cricket tournament in South Africa, was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, here on Thursday.
Karthik played four matches in India’s successful campaign.
Though he did not replicate the success he had in India’s first-ever Twenty20 international last year, when he guided the country to victory against South Africa and won the Player of the Match award, he caught the eye in the crucial group match against the host.
The 22-year-old leapt to his left to catch South African skipper Graeme Smith before replacing an injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the wickets and effecting two stumpings.
Karthik is part of the Indian squad for the first three one-day internationals against Australia, starting in Bangalore on Saturday.
