MANCHESTER: Manchester City moved into second place in the English Premier League on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.
Michael Johnson scored in the 48th minute with a diagonal shot while under pressure from two Villa defenders.
John Carew could have equalised soon after Johnson’s goal, but he missed a close-range header. Villa striker Luke Moore also had a goal disallowed in the 73rd.
“I think we deserved to win,” Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said. “We are not scoring a lot of goals but as long as we win 1-0 I am very happy.”
The win kept City’s perfect home record of three wins and helped the club coached by the former England manager move up six places. Villa, which had beaten Chelsea 2-0 in its previous game, had won its three previous matches in all competitions. It stayed in 11th place. “We felt, coming on the back of the Chelsea result, we had plenty of confidence — but it didn’t work out for us,” Villa manager Martin O’Neill said. “We should have done better today. We were our own worst enemies.” — AP
