Retains title

A fine blend of youth and experience helped Ernakulam blank Kozhikode 3-0 and retain the men’s team title in the Kerala State senior badminton championship at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, Kochi, on Sunday.

The defending champion had young talent Alwin Francis for singles duty and former national doubles stars, brothers Markose Bristow and Jaison Xavier — both in their mid thirties — in its ranks. And there was little Kozhikode could do.

Thulasi stars

State junior champion P.C. Thulasi helped Thrissur blank defending champion Kozhikode 2-0 and win the women’s title.

Kozhikode was without its star Aparna Balan who is now with the Petroleum team.

Later, in the open events, the top four men’s seeds, Sanave Thomas, K.A. Aneesh, Antony Jacob and Alwin Francis, moved to the quarterfinals without much fuss.

Merit George fails

However, the women’s second seed Merit George failed to make the last-eight stage, conceding the game against Ernakulam’s P.S. Linimol after an injury in the decider.
