New Delhi: J.P. Goenka’s team, represented by Sumit Mukherjee, Badal Das, Shibnath De Sarkar, A. N. Banerjee and Debabrata Majumdar, will fight it out with Shree Cements in the final of the HCL bridge tournament.
In a cliffhanger, the team beat Khandelwals by a margin of just 1 imp. In the 48 board semifinals, Khandelwal had a carry over of 8 imps and scored 112 imps for a total of 120 imps. As against this, the Goenka team scored 123 imps and although it was penalised 2 imps, it still had a total of 121 imps.
In the other semifinals, Shree Cements (Manas Mukherjee, Rana Roy, Subrata Saha, Subir Majumdar and Bivas Todi) had carry over of 6 imps against Manyavar. At the end of the second segment, the teams were tied at 64 imps each.
In the last segment, Shree Cements won 38 imps against Manyavars 24, thereby winning the match by 14 imps.
The final, which is to be played on Sunday, will be a 64-board affair.
At the end of the first session of the second elimination of the pairs event for the Neena Bonerjee Trophy, R. Sreedharan of Mumbai and Suhas Vaidya of Pune were leading with an amazing score of over 75 per cent.
