NEW DELHI: Five national medallists will represent India at the AIBA World Cadet boxing championship to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from August 30 to September 9.
India’s hopes will rest on Umesh Yadav (46kg) and Vipin Kumar (50kg), both having shown good maturity to win medals at the international stage. Yadav, who won bronze medal at the Haider Ali Cup in Baku, and silver in an Invitational tournament in Uzbekistan earlier this year, also has a YMCA International silver medal to his credit.
Kumar is a YMCA gold medallist and silver medallist at the Haider Ali Cup. Vikas, Pramod Kumar and Durga Rao Venkala make up the Indian team.
India had drawn a blank from the 2005 World Cadet meet in Liverpool, England, but the next year Sunil clinched gold in Istanbul. Nevertheless, the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has decided to send pugilists only in the lower weight categories.
The necessary sanction and funding from the Union Government was yet to come by.
The team: Umesh Yadav (46kg), Vikas (48kg), Vipin Kumar (50kg), Pramod Kumar (52kg), Durga Rao Venkala (54kg).
Coaches: Mohinder Singh Dhaka and Narender Singh Bisht. Doctor: Nirmolak Singh.
