KOLKATA: Defending champion Kingfisher East Bengal began the new season on a winning note. It breezed past Kolkata Port Trust (KPT) 2-0 in its first match of the Calcutta Football League’s Premier division here at its home ground on Monday.
The host worked up the winning margin by the ninth minute of the match with Mehtab Hussain — the prized import from Mohun Bagan — and Brazilian Edmilson Marques striking within a span of two minutes.
East Bengal had more chances to increase its lead but Edmilson, his upfront colleague Ashim Biswas and Snehasish Chakraborty found their efforts going waste.
The lacklustre encounter came alive with a medico’s faux pas. A KPT defender, Simanta Das, was knocked down by Shehasish in the 65th minute.
The IFA authorised doctor, Nirmal Polley, rushed in to attend Das, who had taken a blow on his chest, and lay on the ground writing in pain. In his haste to bring relief to the player, Polley apparently muddled up and made the former drink methylated spirit thinking it was water.
The player started throwing up and had to be rushed to the hospital. Furious KPT players mobbed the doctor, who was rescued by policemen.
The two other city giants Mohammedan Sporting and Mohun Bagan start their respective campaigns on Tuesday and Wednesday. — Principal Correspondent
