A twin feat for Jayasuriya the icing on the cake

COLOMBO: Sanath Jayasuriya became the first player to achieve the one-day double of 10,000 runs and 300 wickets as Sri Lanka thrashed Bangladesh by five wickets here on Monday.

The 38-year-old veteran gave an impressive all-round performance, taking four for 31 before making 24 to help the home side take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Jayasuriya, who has 12,108 runs from 397 one-dayers, took his 300th wicket when he dismissed last man Syed Rasel as Bangladesh was bowled out for 137 in 46.5 overs.

Man of the match

Sri Lanka overhauled the target with almost 19 overs to spare. Jayasuriya was named man of the match.

“It’s really tough to score 12,000 runs and take 300 wickets. It means a lot of hard work and sacrifice,” Jayasuriya said of his milestone.

“Some times when I can’t perform with the bat I am able to do something with the ball and this gives me a lot of confidence,” he said.

Asked whether he thinks his record can be broken, Jayasuriya said: “If someone works really hard and he is really lucky, he can do that.”

Malinga strikes

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to field in the morning.

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga sparked an early Bangladesh collapse with a devastating three-wicket opening spell that led to the visitors being dismissed for a paltry 137 runs.

Opener Upul Tharanga scored an aggressive 28 runs off 25 balls including six fours before being caught by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim off fast bowler Shahadat Hossain.

Kumar Sangakkara (6) and Mahela Jayawardene (7) were dismissed cheaply while Jayasuriya faced 39 balls and hit four boundaries before falling to Syed Rasel for 24. Earlier, Sri Lanka rode on fine bowling performances by Malinga and Jayasuriya. While Malinga (three for 22) inflicted the early damage, Jayasuriya polished off the tail with his slow left-arm bowling. ’ — Agencies
